Images of Death Valley National Park

Death Valley is one of my favorite places. The contrast between badwater, at -282 feet, and telescope peak at 11000 feet, alone is stunning. But the real interesting differences come in different ecosystems. The racetrack is wildly different from Skidoo. Pupfish live in salty streams, and sand dunes are habitats for lizards.

Dante's View

Dante's View is an overlook a mile above the floor of Death Valley. The salt remains from Manly Lake give the valley an alien feel.
Mushroom Rock

Mushroom rock is eroded by the wind to its unusual shape.
Artists View

Artists View shows the oxidation of several minerals like copper and magnesium.
The Devil's Golfcourse

The Devil's Golfcourse is part of the dried and eroded bed of Manly Lake.
The Racetrack

The racetrack is another lake bed, this one at 4000 feet above sea level. The rocks on the lake bed move in strong winds.
Fox

A kit fox was seen near Scotty's Castle.
Skink

A blue tailed skink was near the dunes/
Another skink

This skink was near the pupfish.
Darwin Falls

Darwin Falls is one of the anomalies of Death Valley. This waterfall is located on the western side of the Panamint Valley, about a two mile hike from a parking area on a dirt road. These falls run year-round. Compared to giant cascades like Niagara or Yosemite, this isn't much, but the juxtaposition with the driest area in the US is interesting.
A Natural Bridge

This natural bridge has been formed by repeated flash floods rushing down this canyon.
Tracks

These are some of the tracks created by the sliding rocks on the racetrack/
Teakettle Junction

Teakettle Junction is aptly named.
Panamint Dunes

The Panamint Dunes are at the north end of the Panamint Valley.
Golden Eagle in Flight

This Golden Eagle was soaring over the hills at the south end of Panamint Valley.
