Images of Utah, outside the parks

Not all the photography was within the parks of Utah. In my trip in 1997, I was able to take pictures of a lot of raptors. When I went to Colorado in December, 2001, I stopped by Cisco, Utah to look for raptors again.

Timpanogos Cave

Timpanogos Cave is a short drive from Salt Lake City, followed by a thousand foot climb to the entrance.

Inside the cave were many rock floes, like this.
Colorado River Canyon

Colorado River approaches Moab, and carved a red rock canyon.
Monument Valley

Monument Valley is famed for it's spectacular mesas.
A Rainbow

The best photography can sometimes be accidental; this rainbow was totally unexpected.

Black-billed Magpie

The Black-billed Magpie is the magpie seen in Utah. In California, we get the Yellow-billed magpie.
Magpie in flight

Magpies in flight are very distinctive, with their flashes of white on the winds.
Ferruginous Hawk

The ferruginous hawk, Buteo regalis is the largest buteo in North America. It has a rust colored back, and the underside is white. It is definitely a regal buzzard.
Take Off!

The bird took off, and if you can look closely, you can see the dark leggings.
In flight

This is another picture of the ferruge in flight.
A Golden Eagle

There were a lot of Golden Eagles in Utah this trip.
Prairie Falcon

The Prairie Falcon is one of the fastest birds around. Seeing one perched is a treat.

A very fast flier.
Another ferruginous hawk

Another ferruginous hawk posed for me for a while. These birds have no fear.
Grosvenors Arch

Grosvenor's Arch is located in the Escalante/Grand Staircase National Monument.

A canyon approaching Moab

The Colorado River enters a canyon approaching Moab from Cisco.
More Canyon

The rock walls are interesting.
Grosvenors Arch

This arch is well away from the beaten track, so when you visit you have it all to yourself.

This is a wider angle on the arch

Ferruge!

Heading to Colorado in December, 2001, I stopped by Cisco again, and saw this hawk.
Another Golden Eagle

Or it could be the same as 4 years ago?
